Research in Dr. Soleimani's Renal Lab

Research at Dr. Soleimani’s Renal Lab was my first experience in a basic science research lab and so I gained a lot from it. My main role in the job was to help with bench work including genotyping biological samples. This was done by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reactions), where specific genes of interest were copied exponentially and then standard samples were used for comparison to identify which samples contained which genes. The genotypes were then correlated with phenotypic presentations to learn more about renal dysfunction and hopefully form a basis for clinical research.

This work impacted me significantly because I learned, for the first time, how to conduct myself in a basic science research setting both safely and professionally. I also learned how to abide by IACUC standard and regulations and contribute meaningfully to research. This is quite useful because a lot of basic science research requires this and this research is essential and impactful in informing higher levels of research that benefit patients in all sorts of ways. Conclusively, this experience has helped me gain some crucial skills that I will definitely need for a future in research.
