Children's Cognitive Research Lab (CCRL)

My experience with the Children’s Cognitive Research Lab included mostly two components. For one, I worked with students in 3rd grade during Math practice sessions. In order to do this, we used IXL software on iPads and worked in groups of 2-3 students per research assistant. The other main component saw me managing, processing, and analyzing the data collected from a similar project (math practice) over the course of the Summer 2018 semester. This experience concluded with my presenting the analyzed work at the Undergraduate Scholarly Showcase in the Spring 2019 semester.

This experience taught me how to work with children of an elementary school age. This can be quite challenging at times if you are not communicating well with the students. However, I learned how important explaining goals to them is to helping them focus on the task at hand. Moreover, I learned how much work goes into processing raw data before it can be analyzed for research findings. This will strongly inform my future work with children and in research as the skills I learned here are quite transferable to other research settings.
