Research in Dr. Ngweny's Neurotrauma Lab

Research in Dr. Ngwenya’s Neurotrauma lab has been a very transformative experience for me and my beginning career in research. In this lab, I was given much more autonomy and responsibility than in any other lab I have worked in. This project began with my examining changes in glutamate receptors associated with Spreading Depolarizations (a phenomenon where the brain experiences a huge loss of energy). I was asked to handle this project from its beginning (processing tissue), all the way to the end (analyzing data and contributing to the discussion about what it might mean). Since then, I have become progressively more involved in the surgeries that the lab performs and I am now (Spring 2020) working on a review paper with the help and guidance of my mentors.

Overall, this experience has impacted me immensely. I believe this is the lab in which I started to become more serious about my future in research and my interest in the field of Neuroscience research has grown immensely. I also have learned so much about the field, from common experiments to understanding journal articles. These skills will make my life much easier as I transition into Medical School and will definitely help me make more out of my time there.

Please stay tuned for a couple of journal articles currently being worked on. I will make sure to post those here as soon as they are published! :D
